An education based on values is more than just a sharing of an interesting story, it is a transformative process.
This was the notable learning that was reiterated when the elementary, high school faculty and non-academic staff attended the seminar conducted by Jaime B. Leornas of Family and Life Philippines last July 31, 2010 in the JGSS library.
Entitled The Teacher in You, Leornas’ lecture on teachers becoming agents of transformation amidst bigger challenges confronting them inside and outside the classroom, reiterated on the importance of education as being transformative as it becomes a vehicle for changing persons in the future in terms of what they believe and how they react as teachers.
Leornas presented facts taken from surveys done by McCann Erickson Youth Study 1992-2000-2006, NFO-Trends Ateneo Youth Study 2001 and Pro-life Philippines Sexuality Study. According to him, although it is still the responsibility of the parent to inculcate a sense of values and that parental input is significant, a child spends six or more hours a day in the school with the teacher so that many after-school activities for students adds to the time element spent inside the school. Teachers face tasks much more complex today than before compared with students 10 years ago. Thus, they must be ready to confront issues that threaten students' lives and well being like alcohol and drug abuse, teen pregnancy, violence, and unsafe sex. A discussion on internet, pornography and other related topics were also included in the seminar.
Leornas, who was the former executive director of Pro-Life Philippines Foundation, currently holds the position of country director of Family and Life Philippines, a subsidiary of Family Life International-New Zealand which is a leading organization under the umbrella of Family Life International (FLI), the Catholic pro-life and pro-family organization who has branches and affiliations in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. The organization is committed to countering the culture of death and promoting the culture of life. E-mail address of Family and Life Philippines is philippineprolife@yahoo.com.
